Outdoor booking is the first decision in any out-of-home campaign, and it is usually the one made last. A brand finishes the artwork, then asks about sites, then finds the good ones taken and takes what is left. The result is a well-designed campaign in a place its audience does not pass.
This guide reverses the order: what to decide first, and what to settle before you pay.
Start with the road, not the board
The unit you are buying is not the board. It is the road the board stands on. The first question is not "what does this board cost" but "who passes here, when, and how fast".
Three things decide what a site is actually worth:
- Direction of travel. The board that serves the morning run into the business districts is not the one that serves the evening run home. If your campaign is a restaurant or anything leisure, the evening direction is your campaign.
- Speed at the point of view. The faster the traffic, the fewer words can be read. A highway carries a short line. It does not carry a paragraph.
- Angle and distance. A large board behind a bridge or a row of trees is smaller in practice than a smaller board with a clean line of sight.
Print and digital: the difference is not the price
The usual comparison between a printed board and a digital screen is reduced to cost, which is the weakest way to compare them.
| Printed board | Digital screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Presence | Continuous for the whole period | A time share inside a loop |
| Changing it | Reprint and reinstall | Same day |
| Flexibility | One message | Different messages by time of day |
| Best for | Long presence, fixing a name | Offers, timing, seasons |
Print buys you presence. Digital buys you timing. If your message is one message and will not change this month, print is both cheaper and stronger. If you have an offer that ends, or a message that differs between morning and evening, digital is the thing that does it.
What to settle before you pay
Ask for these in writing, not on a call:
- The exact period, with start and end dates, and who carries the loss if installation runs late.
- The artwork deadline and its specification: final size, file resolution, bleed.
- A proof-of-installation photo after the fact, dated, taken from the real viewing angle rather than from directly under the board.
- What happens if the screen fails or the print is damaged: compensating days, or not.
- The share of loop on a digital screen: how many seconds, inside a loop of how many minutes, with how many other advertisers in it.
The last one is the point most advertisers skip, and it is the one that decides how often a passer-by actually sees you.
Timing, and why booking starts early
Strong sites in Riyadh are booked before their season. The periods everyone competes for, Ramadan, holidays, national occasions, close first. Booking late does not only mean a higher price; it usually means a weaker site at the same price.
The working rule: decide the road and the period first, lock the booking, then make the artwork to fit what you booked. The reverse, designing first and then hunting for a board that suits the design, is what produces half-solutions.
Then connect it to what comes after
A board does not close the sale. It opens a search. The person who saw you on the road will look your name up minutes or a day later. If they do not find a clear page carrying the same message and the same name, you have paid for the impression and left someone else to collect it.
Make the name on the board the same name someone can type, and make sure the page they land on says the same thing.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a billboard booking run?
For presence and name recognition, no less than four weeks, so the same passer-by is exposed more than once. For an offer tied to a season or a date, the booking should end when the offer does, not after it.
Is a digital screen better than a printed board?
Not better, different. A digital screen suits messages that change or expire; print suits continuous presence with one message. The choice follows the message, not the technology.
What files do I need before installation?
Artwork at the board's final size, at a resolution that carries the print, with bleed, and fonts converted to outlines. Digital screens add a pixel size and a slot duration.
How do I know my advertisement was actually installed?
A dated proof photo taken from the real viewing angle. Ask for it as part of the agreement, before installation rather than after.
